The 15-DVD Learn and Master Photography course from Legacy Learning Systems is an excellent 24-lesson course starting with the beginning basics of photography and progressing you all the way through to advanced concepts of photographic composition and on-location shooting.
This study-at-home photography course is full of 30 hours of photography instruction by professional photographer and trainer Vince Wallace. Because the lessons consist of professional videos on DVD, you can study at your own pace without the pressure of class schedules or deadlines.
Each lesson, from 30 minutes to an hour and a half long, builds on the lesson before it. Through Vince's video instruction, you'll see explanations and examples of the principles that are being taught for each lesson, and then you'll be given assignments related to those principles to complete with your own camera.
And here's a nice surprise: The best images resulting from your assignments will form the basis for a photography book that you will create at the end of the course in Lesson 24!
One of the unique aspects of the Learn and Master Photography course is that you get free access to interact with your instructor and fellow students in the Learn and Master online photography forum.
This allows you to work at your own pace in your own home but also connect with others involved with the same course whenever you need help or want to see what people think about what you have learned or produced.
Just jump on the forums that are provided free as a part of your purchase of the course and you can interact there with your teacher and other students. It's a great way to get the best aspects of a study at home course and also be able to have some interaction with others so you don't feel completely alone in your photography learning experience.
To give you a taste of the Learn and Master Photography course, here's a sample lesson video featuring your instructor, professional photographer Vince Wallace:
In addition to the 15 DVDs containing the 24 lessons and 30 hours of instruction, there are also two CDs that contain the original images that are used in some of the lessons. You can then use software such as Photoshop or other software to do some of the post-processing that is shown as examples in the lessons.
Another great aspect of this course is that it shows you studio photography principles but then also takes you out on location to learn how to do location shoots. You'll learn from watching Vince as he explains the principles of photography and then actually does the on location photo shoots.
Special Note for Homeschoolers:
Note that Learn and Master Photography is not designed specifically for homeschooling like the special Home School Versions of Learn and Master Piano, Guitar and Painting.
However, the following features, in the Photo Course Advisor's opinion, make this 15-DVD self-paced course a natural for home school families:
Do you need a digital SLR for this course?
That's one of the most frequent questions that comes up about a digital photography course like Learn and Master Photography. Is a digital single lens reflex (SLR) camera required, or can you benefit from the course even if all you have is a point and shoot camera?
Well, the answer depends on what you want to learn from the course.
This course is designed to teach people photography skills who have a digital SLR camera. However, some of the introductory material at the beginning of the course (through lesson four) and several other parts of the course that deal with creative aspects of photography are universal no matter what type of camera you're using.
Concepts such as the rule of thirds, leading lines, and using magnetism to draw people into your photos are not dependent on having a digital SLR camera, so anyone who's interested in photography can learn from this course.
For the amount of instruction included, it's reasonably priced as quite a good value even even if you don't own a digital SLR. But, you may want to get a DSLR to get the most out of the course, or you can go back and review the more technical parts of the course later when you do eventually get a DSLR.
Perhaps the best aspect of getting a course like this from well-respected Legacy Learning Systems is their reputation for quality instruction, adherence to the highest ethical standards, and excellent customer service.
In fact, if you don't like the course for any reason, you can return it for a no-questions-asked refund within 60 days of your purchase!
